    I don't have an answer for you. Or, even an opinion. However, I do have a couple recent rookie observations.

    I've been working on relaying ribs on a couple low grade LC's from the late 1800's and early 1900's. When the ribs were removed, it looked terrible. I was horrified. However, once you start digging around and cleaning things up, there wasn't any pitting or damage noted to the barrels. Only the missing solder and surface rust near the loose ribs, and some really nasty looking 100 year old rosin flux.

    Dr. Drew has saved some rib relay instructions on picturetrail. And, that's about what I saw too. Maybe worse:

    Another interesting note. Both barrels had a tin coating on the entire area between the tubes and the underside of the ribs. I'm guessing this was applied for corrosion protection. This takes time. Just a hidden sign of quality IMHO.
