James, there were two patent dates for 1886, the first one was before the hammerless gun came out and was for the concealed hammer, July 13, 1886. The other one was on October 5, 1886 for the three position safety. The hammerless guns first came out in late August as there were only 14 made that month. I would say yours is from 1887. The serial numbers for hammerless guns started at 16000, then 18000, 19000, 20000, and ended somewhere in the 22000 range. It is any ones guess as to how the serial numbers were used, and in my opinion there were only about 1000 made and most likely, less. Catalogs of this time period indicate they were made in 10 or 12 gauge, with 30" or 32" barrels and made in three different weights, medium, heavy and extra heavy. The price for the lowest grade hammerless Quality 2 was $80 and a Quality 3 was $100. They were made to Quality 7 which was $450.00 Your butt plate should have a dog watching a duck fall.
