I am glad to hear that your trip panned out alright as well. Hunting south of Hays was very productive for my party (for pheasant, but sadly not for quail), and for all of the reasons you've already covered. A week before, evidently most of the crops hadn't been cut, but upon our arrival we found almost all had been addressed quite nicely. There were plenty of ditch-parrots and good places to hunt them. The wet and snowy weather on Tuesday-last did cut our trip a bit short, mostly because of how snotty it made the clay/dirt back roads. Even a good 4X4 was no guarantee of a safe return to the pavement.
