    Syracuse hammerless frame markings
    1883-1902 Pat'D marks 1. March 29- 83 (Alexander Brown Breech-loading rotary bolt and joint check mechanism) Some stamped March 20 2. July 13- 86 (Lock mechanism) 3. Oct. 5- 86 (Lock safety catch) 4. Serial number 5. Grade stamp. Alex Brown received Patent Number 274,435 on March 29, 1883 for the rotary bolting mechanism. http://www.google.com/patents?id=uaRAAAAAEBAJ&dq=274435&jtp=1
    The patent itself lists the Issue Date of March 20, 1889.

    Transition frame and forend markings
    1906 No. 2E with transition markings between First Type (1883-1902) and Second Type (1902-1945) 3/20/83 is not stamped as were earlier guns. Receiver top to bottom: 1. Oct. 5- 86 2. July 13- 86 3. Serial number 4. Grade stamp is NOT present (but IS stamped on the left side of the frame) Forend iron 1. Serial number 2. May 28, 1901 (Lewis Automatic Ejector System)
