    16 ga. questions Archived Message

    Hello all,
I've got the proverbial friend with an old L C Smith, who asked me about it. I was able to tell him it was an Ideal grade from 1915, has ejectors, double triggers, regular weight frame, and Damascus barrels. All numbers match, but then it gets interesting. The tubes at the muzzle touch completely and the entire muzzle end looks untouched, yet the barrel length is a little over 24 inches! Can that be right??? The gun has some rattles and is a bit loose, with the lever a bit to the LEFT of center. But it still locks up tight! He's thinking about getting it cleaned up at least, and maybe having the barrels worked on. In her lifetime it's obvious that a LOT of shells have gone through this old girl. It's a family gun so he has no intention of selling it so I told him to put whatever he felt comfortable with, into it. I got curious though, and wondered how many 16 ga. guns from that era were Damascus? And how often someone would order a gun WITH ejectors, but NOT with a single trigger?
Hope all is well with everyone. And hope ya'll have a great time at the Vintagers this year. Wish us luck down here in south Ga. We're hunkerin' down for the arrival of Hanna, Ike, and, maybe, Josephine.
    Chick
