    Nice gift. The "engravings" on the barrel is a process on how the barrels were made, they are called Damascus. Some have very nice patterns and the higher grades used a better quality of steel and iron and the patterns on these are beautiful.
    From your serial number I believe your gun was made between 1883-84 and the grade would be Quality C. The cheapest grade was a Quality A for $40.00. The highest being a Quality F for $200.00. Quality C was $80.00, plus $5.00 extra for any length exceeding 30 inches on barrels.

    As far as value it all has to do with condition. If you can post a few close-up pictures, someone here might be able to give you an idea of what it is worth. There is not many of these around and is hard to give a price on them.
