Gil, Try using Citristrip, it's a stripping gel and works great. If you get some on your skin it does not burn like the other harsh strippers. Put it on the checkering and use a toothbrush and brush till there is no more finish left in the checkering, wash with water, let dry and brush the checkering again. I would have used the stripper from the beginning and not sanded so much.
