    Tim,
    Congratulations on your inheritance. The only thing that I might be able to help you with is that this gun should also have a banjo shaped escutcheon with a roller type release on the forend also (exceptions to every rule). This feature allows the forend to be held against the barrels, and is held there by a notch in the back part of the loop (forend lug).
    On all L.C. Smiths the gun has to be re-cocked (broke open) and then the forend can be taken off and put back on, if not there is a lot of stress put on the wood and on the "J" spring and it could be bent and become loose like you are saying.
