Top Tangs on Competition Guns Archived Message

I have a two barrel Specialty double on which the barrels are set up for skeet and trap shooting. The safety has been removed and a blank piece of steel resides in the top tang safety slot. It's professionally fitted and about the same degree of worn case color as the remainder of the tang The barrels are both serial numbered to the gun and are marked '1' and '2' so they would appear to be factory. Two separate forends with different period escuctheons lead me to believe the gun was sent back for the second barrel set. My question regards the top tang: On pigeon guns and others set up for competitive shooting without safety's, were the top tangs made without the safety slot or were they filled in with a blank?
