    Another method that works is to run a magnet across the springs to draw off the filings.
    Air will work, but be careful of sending the filings further into the mechanism.

    A magnet will draw metal filings-even if they are oil-covered.The stronger the magnet-better the recovery... Carefully done. One of the neatest is the inexpensive telescopic-type shop magnet that extends.Auto parts houses feature them reasonably...
    It is handy for finding and recovering misdropped screws and pins.
