    My suggestion would be to use a long slender screwdriver, wrap it with tape and stick it between the barrels and gently pry upwards while "rolling the release" until you can get a finger in and then with gentle pressure and doing the release it should come off.
    After gettilng it off, make sure the oval head machinist screw going from the forend metal to the roller catch is tight.
    As far as getting the forend seated well against the receiver, I don't know how you could fasten the forend on without doing so. There is very little room for the roller release clip to catch on the rear part of the lug.
    Did you have the gun re-cocked when you put it on, and is it re-cocked now?
