Yet another paranoid urban legend, but admittedly one I hadn't contemplated. Using a serial number obtained from the web (or elsewhere) to go after a gun? Let's think about this for a minute: First, you would have to prove that the gun actually exists and in someone's possession, and possession being 9/10ths of the law anyway, I would think that it would be damned-ably hard to prove that a theft had ever occurred unless a verifiable police report of the incident existed somewhere; law enforcement wouldn't touch it otherwise. (Note: isn't there already some type of Federal Database of stolen firearms? FBI?, BATF?) You would have to want this firearm very, very badly, at a minimum needing to hire an attorney (always an expensive prospect with no guarantee of results) and then risking fraud and perjury charges in your attempt to get it (legitimately or otherwise). Very few guns are worth that type of grief, if any (treasured family heirlooms being a possible exception). Unless you had absolutely ironclad proof of previous ownership and the afore-mentioned police report of the theft, you would be, IMHO, wasting your time and money and risking prosecution for fraud in the attempt.
