Russ Ruppel would be the guy to answer this question if he were still with us; but I'll take a stab. Although one will experience minor differences in fit, irons for FW frames are the same regardless of guage due to the fact that all FW frames are the same; having only the breech balls modified to fit barrel bore size. When you examine regular frames, especially from early Smith guns, one will find a variety of frame sizes and types; all of which will impact the size of a fore iron. I realize this is a short answer (I'm lazy tonight); hopefully someone else more qualified will elaborate further.
