Alpha characters in serial numbers Archived Message Posted by Robert L on March 28, 2007, 4:59 pm Is there any significance to the letters RE or S, both of which preceed the serial numbers of 2 Smith's that I have. I found, when using the serial number lookup feature on this sight, that by inserting the S with the serial number of that gun I get a drastically different date than I do if I leave the S off of the serial number. The RE did not return a valid date when appended to the serial number of the other gun.
