I am attempting to return a 1925 Ideal Grade 20 gauge FW to near factory specs. The gun was not a custom order. The LOP for a finished two trigger stock on the 1928 drawing is shown at 14 1/2. Was it different prior to 1928 and if not, how consistent has that number (14 1/2) proven to be? It seems quite a few "original" (non-custom) guns with "original" butt plates come up less. Closer to 14 1/4 overall WITH butt plate, leaving a stock only LOP of appx. 14. I realize there are no absolutes with Smith guns, but for guns shipped to hardware and sporting goods stores is there a common dimension? Shifting gears slightly, if you factory ordered a recoil pad without specifying a LOP would the factory cut the stock the thickness of the pad returning the LOP to their standard dimension, presumably 14 1/2? If the factory installed either a butt plate or a pad was the stock end always cut straight? Lastly, what is the accepted LOP measurement, from the tip of the front trigger or from the apex of the front trigger curve? Wow , that's alot of questions. Your assistance as always, will be well appreciated and invaluable.
