David, You are correct when you say the pin punch is either going to bend or break. Notice I recommend using a tapered punch, I use a small nail set. they are made from hard steel. It is not going to bend or break and because of the taper it is not going to damage the treads in the top lever. Also it leaves your other hand free to push the top lever into the hole if needed. The system with the altered screwdriver requires that you have 3 hands or a helper. From around 1970 to 1992 I made my living buying, selling and restoring double guns. During the period of time I owned or worked on upwards of 150 L C Smiths, so I am fairly familiar with them.
