Unless Mr. Brophy left some references other than that in his book, we will never know his motivation; but I have always assumed his work was largely "motivated" by the fact that it was part of his "job" as the historian for Marlin Firearms (the histories of the Marlin Firearms Company and the LC Smith gun were forever linked when Marlin purchased the Hunter Arms Company). Obviously Marlin didn't direct Mr. Brophy to undertake such a project, but he happen to come along when the original Hunter records were being tossed by Marlin workers; and being the historian he was, recognized what he saw. I suspect his fascination with these vintage records, his interest in guns, and his particular interest in the quality of the Smith gun itselg all combined to inspire his work (and we will be forever indebted to him and grateful for the fact that he recognized those records and salvaged what remained!)
As to Mr. Houchins, he may post here at length and provide additional insight; but I asked that same question of him a few months ago. What he related to me was printed in the LCSCA newsletter (Volume four, 2007, I believe). I suggest you read same for his story.
