    Welcome Greg, if you type in 3 position safety in the search box you will get a lot of information. But I will explain it to you. The 3 position safety was made for trap shooters that were also hunters, the purpose was that when the safety was placed in the rear position, upon firing both barrels and opening the gun, the safety stayed in the rear position. This way when calling for the bird (clay target, or box bird shooting) you didn't have to worry about taking the gun off safe, and losing a bird fumbling with the safety. Now hunting, the safety was put in the forward position, upon firing one or two shells and breaking gun to reload gun automatically went back to safe.
