David, this is a replacement stock on an Ideal Grade I just bought. It had a rubber recoil pad, that I didn't like, and I wanted to look at the wood away from the receiver. Also wanted to give it a nice finish to really show the wood. I don't like a built-up finish on any gun. (I do have a few non-"elsies" like that) I do like what Dr. Bill uses, and have used tung oil on a lot of furniture pieces, also used shellac on smaller pieces so I thought I would try "French Polishing' this one. You can put 5 coats on the 1/3 of the stock in 10 minutes. When it's finished, I will post a picture of it. I just got Brownell's buttplates in the mail (extremely fast service). The only thing I don't like is that near the toe on the back is a partial hole probably from the moulding process, right in the way of the bottom of the stock. have to fill it in and paint it black to match. Can't win.
