Sounds like someone got a little too exuberant with the buffing wheel. At any rate, Ken Hurst is a master engraver and as fine an engraver and individual as any you will ever come across; he posts here on a regular basis. Keep in mind that chasing out the existing engraving will remove all existing surface blue in the impacted areas; so a new and professional slow rust-blue may be required to correctly restore the factory look/finish you desire for those barrels.
