I checked the a partial list of Hunter employees complied by Rick Beyer and saw no one with the last name Stanton on that list; but he stated up front his list was far from comprehensive, so that does not mean Stanton could not have been an employee. To me the engraving coverage and style is equivalent to that of a Hunter Arms pre-13 Grade 3 (featherweight frames were available as early as 1907, and I have owned a 1912 vintage 12-bore Grade 3 with FW frame). If the engraving was not excecuted at the gunworks, whoever performed the work did the engraving using a Hunter Arms pattern. That said, this gun does lack some typical Grade 3 features, the most prominent being the hand-filed "points" atop the breech balls; however, since no effort has been made to change the originial grade moniker from Field Grade to something else, it should stand on its own merits and be judged as configured. Again, if the owner can track the guns history, it remains possible that it could be tied to an original employee and authenticated. From personal experience, I can tell you that investigating the history behind some of these old guns is by far the most iteresting aspect of collecting.
