    There are other considerations besides the barrel material that need to be taken into account. There is a difference in the strength of the action and locking system of guns, and the Baker guns are definately not equal to the guns made after the Alexander Brown patented rotary bolt action. I would not want to shoot the gun in question because of the action without regard to the type of barrel material.
    I have a Wesson double gun with true Damascus barrels, but it is the locking system of the gun that keeps me from firing it. Also, it is not true that Damascus guns were not proofed for nitro loads. Hunter' own literature tells us differently. For that matter, I believe that the British proof houses used black powder for all proofs, including Nitro, just increasing the load for the Nitro proof.
