    Extractor malfunction Archived Message

I have a pre 1913 grade 3 Smith that seems to have an extractor problem. This gun has the extractor mechanism that uses a cylinder with a pin protruding on each side that goes into a slot in the frame. Opening the gun causes the cylinder to rotate, and the spring loaded ear in the cylinder pushes on the end of the extractor rod. It works fine until the gun is nearly all the way open. However the last few degrees of opening seem to let the ear slip past the end of the extractor rod, and the extractor falls back down flush with the breech end of the barrels. Is this the way this is supposed to work? I removed the extractor and cylinder. Nothing seems to be worn too badly, or broken and the spring in the ear is fine. What seems strange is that the bottom of the extractor pushrod is tapered toward the end that contacts the ear that pushes it to allow what's happening to happen (the end is smaller than the rest of the rod because on the taper on it). It doesn't appear to be altered. Anyone had this problem or know what might be the problem? This system looks so simple, I'm embarrassed that I can't determine what's causing the problem. Thanks for your help.
