I have had two sets of barrels refinished, and I specified lacquer on both. I do shoot them regularly. I am happy with the results so far. As to the product you're referring to, I doubt it's anything specific to gun work. Lacquer is pretty forgiving, and can be thinned to whatever consistency is desired. You just have to decide between satin or gloss.
