I've looked through some of the Smith advertising listed here and found the one about the "Single Sighting Plane" that I was probably thinking about, but that was much later (1930s?) and more pronounced. When you're used to British guns, you become accustomed to the "game" and "swamped" ribs they generally employed. These Smith guns seem to have their own unique variant, almost a "target" rib.
