Just over a month away from our annual gathering in Sanford for the Spring Southern SXS and it'll be on us before you know it!
The theme for this years display is going to be Purpose Built Guns. A Purpose Built Gun would be any gun that when not ordered otherwise would have characteristics common to other guns bearing the same grade name. For example:
Premier Skeet & Skeet Specials would typically have shorter barrels and relatively open chokes.
Trap Grades, both double & single barrel would typically have longer barrels, relatively tight chokes, with reinforced barrel loops for the double barrel guns.
Pigeon Grades had jeweled lock mechanisms that were intended to decrease lock time, and some were produced without a safety mechanism to decrease the potential for a Fail-To-Fire when the big bucks were on the line.
Long Range Wild Fowl guns (in any grade) were produced with tighter than usual chokes, and were advertised as having longer choke bores than standard to increase pattern density at longer distances. Some Long Range guns have been observed to have normal length choke bores, but those with longer choke bores do exist, and I'd like to display a couple along with the actual measured length of choke bore if possible.
Finally any Salesman Sample gun such as a Cut-A-Way or Try-Gun
would obviously be Purpose Built to demonstrate the manufacturing particulars of the LC Smith Gun. We've never actually seen a Try Gun, though they're known to have existed. Sure would be great to have one on display!
With a limit of somewhere around 20 guns, we'll only be able to display a few of each category listed above.
If you think you might have a nice example to share with the Southern Attendees, shoot me an Email at John*northstarconstructioncorp.com (substituting the @ symbol for the *)and let me know what you've got in mind. The number of responses and the diversity of offers will determine just exactly what ends up on display.
Looking forward greatly to seeing all of my friends in Sanford, & try to get in some practice between now & then so we can take it to them Parker Boys again!
