Dogs Head Escutcheon

I have just received a 12 Gauge LCSmith with very good damascus barrels. It was a gift from a friend who found out about my interest in Smith guns and passed it on to me. I believe it is from the late 1800’s. Action is tight and the wood seems workable. It has some engraving that I’m not familiar with. I will post some pictures in the next day or so hoping for some help with identification of the model type. The fore end has a missing piece that is inlaid into about a one inch diameter circle. I believe this was a dogs head escutcheon for decoration. Any thoughts. The fore end is also missing an ebony tip I presume. Thanks in advance for any input.
