Comments on Closing a Top Lever SxS

On many occasions I have read when closing your gun you should apply thumb pressure on the top lever to prevent it from snapping back. I just read this cautionary advice on another forum so I decided to bring it up here. Discussing this with an expert Pennsylvania gunsmith years ago he advised the following: When you are in 'show and tell' with some refreshments hold the top lever to prevent from snapping back BUT if you are in the process of shooting that is a dumb thing to do because you want to ensure a good lock up and holding the lever back may prevent a secure fastening. Sounds like good advice, what say you?
