If you order a research letter and what you receive contains a note stating that the gun was returned for some reason (reasons are usually not detailed); then it's possible your stock modification represents factory work, but the installation of rubber pads is seldom recorded in the records. Bottom line is that it's unlikely you/we will never know? But a letter would tell you if the gun shipped originally as a two barrel set, which adds to its value. Many Smith guns were returned later to have an additional barrel set installed, but that work is often not recorded either; so we examine the additional barrel set for details indicating they do represent factory work.
