Kraus never signed his engraving, but a rumor has persisted for as long as I can remember that he signed his work beneath the opening lever; but this crap was started by someone to "fake proof" of the authenticity of an upgrade for monetary gain. I was asked about this gun earlier today by Jent; it's a fake and the way to tell is by examining minute, but important, details in the way a high grade Smith gun was finished. Fakers are always exposed by their lack of attention to the smallest details. Please enlarge the attached photo of the barrel flats from a REAL Deluxe; then note the differences between factory markings and the barrel flats pictured below. First of all, the serial number on the fake is in the wrong location, as is the word Deluxe; and the font style, engraving style, and font size is wrong. Additionally, even on Deluxe Grade guns Hunter always noted the frame size code and the auto-ejector code option; the serial number on the fake is devoid of the required, and and most important omitted “FWE” code markings. The fake may appear original to some on the outside; but were I able to inspect the internals of the "DeLuxe" I’m betting I could find the gun devoid of many other important finish details standard on all Deluxe Grade guns produced by Hunter Arms.
