Examining a 1904 vintage Monogram Grade Smith gun recently, I removed the lock plates and discovered a "P" stamp I'd never encountered before (see pic below). Puzzled, I inquired of Dr. Jim for his thoughts and received the following response:
"While I seldom remove lock plates, I have never seen this "P" or any other letter stamp in this location. The employee list does not include a name beginning with a "P" who was a stock maker. Inspector M.W. Mack's symbol was "P", but he usually inspected the mid and lower grades. William McKnight usually inspected the higher grades".
So.........has anyone ever encountered this "P" stamp in the wood beneath the lock plate; and if so, what is your theory as to its meaning? Looking forward to the discussion. Tom
