Hunter Special Misfires Frequently

i have a nice 16ga hunter special that miss fires alot. a reputable smith had it for several months last year and couldn't fix it. after much tinkering , i figured out that the hammers were scraping inside the wood stock when tripped, slowing the firing pin strike. i also think one firing pin is crudely made and may be an issue. since the gun has been apart alot the past two years, i'm no longer confident in the positioning of the "firing pin check stud" part 61-f that fits in the slot of "firing pin" 67-f in Brophys's Plans book. question: does the vertical tip of the check stud face forward or backward and why? thanks for any help
