It may be a rare bird and likely didn't go for cheap, but it's also going to take some deep pockets for a proper restoration; and some things, like the deep pitting on the top rib of the Whitworth barrels can never be repaired. The 26" barrels and forearm are clearly a later vintage factory addition, and the fact that the 26" barrels were marked Crown Grade is the reason the auction company listed the gun as a Crown rather than an A2 model. In my opinion the butt stock has been replaced; wrong color, lack of ribbon work in the checkering pattern, and the fact that the decorative "wing" is separated from the rest of the pattern is evidence. The crazed finish is also another reason; Hunter high-grade finishes don't craze. Sad to see a rare high-grade Smith gun so badly mistreated; but we also know there are other examples. I hope whoever purchased the gun will indeed restore the piece to as close to original as possible.
