Re: type one L C Smith SXS Hammergun
Gun mentioned is from 1899 and would be a 6 pin lock with the Type II hammers. The Type I hammers (high hammer) were used until 1896 and were on a 5 pin lock. This gun will still have the joint check which was discontinued in 1899. In my records the last one I have is 78619 and at this time it had the Type III or "C" style hammers that were used until the end of production.
Nice shotgun and would be worthy of a clean-up and restoration. The Royal Steel barrels are fluid steel and also were used till the end of production.
Many of us still shoot these old hammer guns after they have been evaluated safe by a qualified gunsmith that knows L.C. Smiths.
