Doc, if I read the posters comments correctly; he was asking about the "R" prefix, not suffix. If so, the "R" prefix indicates the gun was built using Hunter's standard or "Regular" sized frame as opposed to the optional Featherweight ("FW") sized frame. As to rarity, Hunter used the "R" frame regularly; and it was only after the Marlin Firearms Co purchased the gun works in 1945 that we see only the "FW" frame and stamp exclusively. Had this Ideal been ordered with auto ejectors, the frame stamp prefix would have been "RE".
