Blown barrel on 12 ga. Field: Can it be fixed?

Back in the 1960s while hunting, my brother's 12 ga. Field probably took too heavy a load and the barrel ruptured. We're not sure of the cause. He still has the gun with the blown right barrel. He has this question: Can the blown barrel be removed, and a genuine L. C. Smith barrel from a non-working gun be welded in its place? He does not want to swap a set of barrels because he wants to keep matching serial numbers. Has this sort of work ever been done? and if so at what expense? Any input would be appreciated.
