W.W. Greener authored a book a 100plus years ago entitled (I think?) The Shotgun; and in that book is a lengthy discussion of the various barrel steels and makers from this early area, as well as comparative testing results. Like Drew, I know of no connection to Whitworth Steel and their being a manufacture of Damascus barrels; but if there is a connection, it might be noted in this book. And for what this comment is worth, I've had some conversations with the individual you referenced as having made the claim of Whitworth making Damascus barrels; and my experience is that he can really spin some interesting yarns! I don't know if he actually believes his claims, makes up stories simply to rile folks up, or if he's simply too proud to admit when he's proven wrong; but until the claims he makes are verified, I wouldn't give them much credence.
