The actual issue here is not a lack of room for operation concerning the safety. The issue comes from the fact that the hook MUST set on the serrated post for the second barrel to be fired. This cannot be accomplish any other way. When the hook rests on the serrated post as it should after the first shot, then the safety cannot engage as the safety block arm is too high for the safety toggle to block it. This is perfectly normal, while it's a horrible feature of the trigger. But...A.E. Lard, the triggers inventor, must have figured if a person didn't fire the second barrel they'd break open the gun to reload, which resets the trigger make the safety button able to move to the safe position.
