The Independent Christmas Music Show
presents our featured artist
Location: California USA.....
Born and raised in rural area of California, Deborah grew up surrounded by nature, but close enough to San Francisco to be influenced by the city’s history of social, musical and political upheaval. Her lyric-driven and soul-wise music draws on folk, rock, and Americana and is often compared to Lucinda Williams and The Cowboy Junkies. Venturing into everything from funk and reggae to rock and blues, her expansive and eclectic sound has evolved over her years earning an Environmental Studies degree at UC Santa Cruz; studying writing and poetics at The Naropa Institute in Boulder, CO; voice and yoga in Mysore, India, and co-writing and collaborating with her Bay Area peers.
She’s released several CDs and EPs of critically noted original music, including the acclaimed 2013 release, Little Bird (produced by Art Khu and described as "a masterful piece of work"). She again worked with Khu on 2016's 7-song CD, Beauty Everywhere, which was recorded at Tiny Telephone Studio in Oakland.
Regularly performing regionally and throughout the US, her music has appeared the PBS Series Road Trip Nation and several compilations including the Songwriters From the Fog Compilation V1. Along with her solo work, she confounded the band Bay Station with Kwame Copeland; contributes prose and poetry to Deborah Slater Dance Theatre; has led writing groups and spoken about songwriting and creativity at Macworld and SXSW. A life-long writer, her writing has appeared in many publications including No Depression, The Sun, Common Ground, and “The Thinking Girl’s Guide to Enlightenment.”

"Crooks’ is simply too original to be a singer who will be known as someone who sings like…like no one. She changes gears seamlessly and in regards to Lucinda [Williams], Deborah may have a wider pallet of styles than even Lucinda."
Dani Heyvaert January 13, 2014
A very nice, versatile voice, great songs, lots of variety, delicate arrangements and a more than solid band.
If I count all together, then I come out with one of the finest records I could take in this still young year.
