New Silkstone Francie on Mattel site --- Was she really from "across the pond" ?? Msg

According to their description, she is from across the pond; I knew Twiggy & Stacey were, but never remember hearing that about Francie. She is pretty and glad they went with blonde, but something seems a little off about her. Maybe hair too puffy or hands don't look quite right, but I will probably get her as price is ok

Francie is a character that was introduced in 1966 as "Barbie's 'MOD'ern cousin" from the U.K., capitalizing on the "British Invasion" in pop culture. The doll had an extensive line of mod-style clothing, often employing bright colors and geometric patterns similar to fashions associated with progressive fashions of the late 1960s to early 1970s. She also often had a hair style similar to that of Marlo Thomas who starred on the popular sitcom of the time "That Girl". At 11¼" tall, the Francie doll was shorter than Barbie but taller than Skipper, making the character presumably between the two in age. \

I thought Twiggy & Stacey were the only British ones. msg

The hair on the doll looks awful. Why do they do these enormous curls on repros? The original hair just flipped up. It wasn't that long.

Exactly what I thought. Looked at Bazaar Cat Reprints 66-68 and no mention ...MSG

No mention of Francie being British. The Penneys catalog page said "she's BACK from abroad and wearing the latest London/Carnaby Street fashions". If she is "back" from abroad it sounds like she was just visiting Britain. I want to see proof that Mattel called her British. I was wondering if the Barbie Talk magazine at that time had said anything different. Would like to hear what Joe Blitman has to say on this

Yes, was just looking at my Nighty Bright and her hair looks great, no big curls.

I remember Francie was Barbie’s cousin. Maybe they have now changed the story.
