Supposedly it is to "improve safety" and prevent bots. It is also to put their boards in compliance with EU standards. How it is implemented (meaning how often it is required) seems to vary by day or whatever "mood" Boardhost is in. After nearly nine months, I cannot find a pattern and neither can my husband - whose job it is to figure stuff like this out.
I've tried relaxing the board controls, but then we do get the bots and spam/porn which puts us in violation of Boardhost's rules. Yet they are the ones who have created this situation. So in that sense, we are stuck.
The only other option is to create a registration system. Meaning you sign up to post and then you don't have to verify. However, there is a fear that will discourage new board posters, as is the case with Prego, a board that was, at one time, focused on Tyler and other Tonner larger sized dolls. In that case, you can't even look at the board to see if you want to join. I just tried.
Is it possible to have a registration system without the total block that other boards have? Possibly. I've heard that Doll Divas has that kind of system, but I am not certain of that. I also confess that I haven't looked into it deeper since I've been so preoccupied with my mom, as her health started to decline at the same time the Boardhost changes came about. However, I certainly can see what is out there to learn.
The only possible problem is that some settings were "set in stone" to so speak by Joanne when she created the board. Meaning that once you picked a certain setting, you can't go back and undo it. Kind of like the digital publishing world where, once you opt into DRM (digital rights management) encryption, you can't undo it. Basically, no changing your mind.
Over the coming months, I do plan to look into our board settings more closely and possibly bring back some of the things we used to have - like the little icons at the front of each message. I just haven't done it before for a number of reasons.
And all of that is a really long way of saying, I have no idea why sometimes it's there and other times it's not. Or why sometimes you receive alert emails and other times you don't. It is a mystery that only Boardhost knows the answer to, I'm afraid.
