I've never collected Mackies, though I've run into a few that were good deals that I resold. I think they're gorgeous, but I mostly collect vintage/mod and celebrity dolls. That said, here is one of my favorites inspired by his design for Carol Burnett in the "Gone with the Wind" spoof "Went with the Wind." It's been called one of the best sight gags ever. Here is the doll in a library display I did a few years ago.
My favorite gowns were black lace that he designed for the King Sisters when he worked on their 1960s TV series. (See below.) I've always thought the long version would look great on Barbie. That show was his first solo design job and he said it was a great experience because he was able to design for so many different ages and sizes and body types. He even designed prom dresses for three of the King Cousins who graduated high school during the show's run!
From all accounts, he was as kind as he was talented.
