First, my regular line Dia de Muertos dolls were delayed in transit due to massive storms and flooding here in Pennsylvania. They're now supposed to arrive tomorrow, provided tonight's storms don't cause more chaos. Actual pics to come when they arrive.
Those who collect the Dia series might remember that, starting last year, Mattel did away with the designer Dia dolls and instead switched to a more myths & legends focused series. The inaugural doll was La Llorona which, imo, is stunning in real life and one of the few more recent dolls I wouldn't trade for anything.
This year's legends doll is Calavera Catrina, "The Dapper Female Skull" who is also sometimes called La Catrina.
She's an iconic zinc-etching skeleton figure created around 1910 by Mexican printmaker José Guadalupe Posada that has become the ultimate symbol of the Dia de los Mueretos. Rivera painted her into his famous 1947 mural, Sueño de una Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central (A Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park), wearing a fancy feather hat.
While I sold Pink Magnolia (which I kind of regret) and missed the Benito Santos Dia doll completely, I have to say that I like Calavera Catrina and she'll be coming to live here when she's released.
