It’s hard to me choosing just a memory I treasure of Joanne, or summarizing in a few words what she meant to me… But if I had to choose something concrete, I’d say how he showed me how to appreciate everyone dolls, no matter the era, or the photo quality, but just the love people put on their dolls. I’ve never been a standard collector, since from the beginning my favorite dolls weren’t “special”, or at least nor so special as other dolls were (I mean: silkies, new collector editions, vintage treasures, etc, you know). My collection was focused in the 80s, a decade not so popular back in 2007 when I joined ITP. Joanne always showed interest and real appreciation for everyone’s dolls, including mine. The way she focused the board, the way she commented the posts, the care for everyone situation... She taught me that the really important of collecting wasn’t only the items collected, but the people. I learned it, and when years after I joined other collectors groups on Facebook I was surprised and disappointed, since the atmosphere wasn’t even close at all. So the board became a shelter to me & my collection, my true dolly family.
Besides this, of course I agree with everyone about Joanne’s generosity. Every time she shipped something, she included lots of extras (some little, other really important) and cards. I treasure especially in my memory those she wrote to my niece Sofia, who is already 13 years old. Joanne, always feeling everyone a part of our special family. Once she even included a $10 bill!! I kept it (OK, here in Spain is not so easy spending dollars) and put it on the fridge’s door, so every time I see it I think of her (it’s the kitchen of our vacation house, in the village where we feel we really belong to).
I’d like to add something more... Joanne and all the wonderful ITPinkers were the first people I shared my collection with, becoming the seed of what collecting means to me.
When she ‘went’ I was kinda out of collecting, focused in other more important things at that moment. I heard the news later, so I feel I didn’t pay her a well-deserved tribute then. Hope this post fulfills that in some way. Joanne, I miss you. Thank you for everything, across the stars.
Big hugs & love everyone,
