I love to read your stories Bethany!
This is one of (cough - sorry Kathy) three cranberry servers that I own.
As it happened, my family was having brunch with my Aunt Sue (but only kind of an aunt) at her retirement community yesterday. I mentioned that, prompted by Kathy M's post, I went looking for our cranberry server so I could use it for Thanksgiving, as I knew I had two. When I found them? I discovered that I had three and I wondered why on earth anyone would have three cranberry servers - all identical.
As it happened, Aunt Sue had the answer. Years ago when they were all the rage, her mother, Gladys, bought a dozen identical cranberry servers with matching serving trays and gave them as gifts, firmly believing that every proper hostess should have them. One was given to my mom, another to me (even though I was a baby), and a third to my paternal grandmother. Mine and my mother's never left my parents' house and in 2001, when both of my grandparents passed away, we co-mingled some of their good silver with ours. Hence, three cranberry servers. I also still have the serving trays for three identical sets so that if I ever need to serve cranberries shaped like a can to a crowd? I'm covered.
This would probably also explain why there are duplicates of a lot of things between my house and my parents including sugar cube servers, mini compotes, and a whole host of other "stuff" that no one uses any longer.
