That's such a funny origin story it's much more exciting than a generic love song. I've loved your music for quite a few years and hope to one day get my hands on vinyl record of yours, but I'm only a student so £100 can't go to something like that unfortunately!
In case you were curious, Jersey used be like 40% apple orchards, so to preserve the excess apples they would boil them over an open fire with spices and cider!
As to how Jersey got its 'French slang' it actually is an entirely different language! Though Jersey had connections with places like Gaspe, the language evolved from early settlers, the introduction of vikings from the Dutchy of Normandy and then English and French.
In Jerriais it is called La Nier Beurre or The Black Butter, for its dark appearance. Its great over crackers or on meat, and so thick from 2 days of boiling! We still make it during a community event that just passed this year!
Thank you for this little nugget of information. I will now go listen to the song! Previous Message
Hi Tama
So how did Jerseyites get a derogatory French slang moniker?
LOL!
Anyhow, our guitarist Ed King and lead singer, Lee Freeman, both gone now, used to live together in Burbank, Ca. and after a long tour came back home at a late hour and were looking for something to munch on when the looked in the fridge they saw that their butter had turned...I thought butter could keep forever...but I guess not. Lee referred to it as black butter....I guess I should add that they were in an altered state of mind. This enabled them to stay up all night and write a song. It turned out to be a trilogy. past present and future. I had no idea that black butter was a Jersey thing...maybe Lee and Ed did...I don't know and will never know for sure. They were both well read...maybe it was something the saw somewhere...I wish I knew. But I like the idea that it's actually something that has an origin. Thanks for that...and welcome to the SAC board!

As a Jerriais crapaud myself, I've come to realise black butter actually originated here (jersey channel islands). So now here I am wondering what its doing in a california bands song.
Any information on this?
