We did the show like three or four times. We had also done the movie Psych-Out with Dick Clark and did a few concerts he promoted. We knew him quite well. On a first name basis. He even invited our parents to attend the screening of that movie. We may have been a little overly excited but not nervous. He loved us which made it all quite nice. He even brought us into the recording studio to record a special version of Birds in My Tree to fit a scene in his movie. It was his favorite song of ours. The scene it was for ended up being cut. I never found out what happened to the master of that recording but Dick Clark owned it.
Here's an odd full circle;
In the 80's I started selling cars and the dealership sold one to Dick's secretary. The manager gave her a list of names for autographed pictures. My name was on the list and when she came back and handed me mine she said you must be very special. It had a note saying it's been a long time since Strawberry Alarm Clock and some other niceties.
Fast forward a few more years to the 90's and I was Christmas shopping with my wife at Topanga Plaza or the Promenade (wherever Sacks was) and we decided to go separate ways to buy gifts for each other. Well my usual go to place was the book store. While looking through some I looked up and saw Dick on the other side of the rack from me. I said Hi Dick and he looked up and said is that you George? He asked what I was up to and how were my parents, etc. Then he asked who I was shopping for and I told him my wife and that she was going to meet me at the Sacks make-up counter. He said great! I'm shopping for my daughter lets do it together and catch up. We walked through the mall and were really engaged in conversation to the point where I had no idea that heads were turning as we passed by. Anyway my designated meeting time was fast approaching. When I said so Dick said I want to come with you and meet your wife. So we get to the make-up counter on time and we walked up to my wife Claire and I introduced them to each other. Claire was flabbergasted as were the other girls nearby. I mean speechless. He was so nice and genuine and asked her opinion on gifts for his daughter. We had a great visit.
