He was really an R&B player in a country rock band. His approach to the songs the three writers came up with was totally unique. Even when they were in full country mode. He's a real bass player. Kind of the way James Jameson is.
Now Neil is actually not too dissimilar. He also has an R&B feel. Kind of a jangily Steve Cropper thing with a twang of country and the abandon of rock. He's a free spirit and really just lets go.
When he plays acoustic it's a more perfect approach. It's then that you can see just how brilliant he is.
Even in his wildest moments, where you get the feeling that he's left all musical sensibilities in the dust, there's still a distinct purpose to his madness...he tells stories when he solos like he does with his words.
