Little has changed there. A song has a head (the strict basis for what's to come), then the various solos each expressing their take on it. Then at the end you get back to the top and finish with the sum of all the parts.
We (SAC) have always been a kind of jam band. We all had some form of jazz in our backgrounds. Some more than others, we tend to put things together rather neatly and uniformly, but at the heart of it is a free spiritedness. There are a couple of unreleased SAC pieces that are totally free sounding but actually structured. Listen to the solo section of the new version of Hummin Happy on our Wake Up Where You Are album from 2012.
