I know McCartney was slammed by critics for re-recording old Beatles tunes for "Give My Regards to Broad Street" in '84 insisting Paul was doing so out of desperation for something to put out,but what's really wrong there?It would be okay for others to remake the tunes but not for the original artist to do a re-take?I know some writers have proven it's only natural to want to revisit things Paul Simon,Elton John,Billy Joel,etc have of course done this in show,but is it artistic suicide to revisit last works in studio? Generally speaking, it's really inspiring to have a producer that loves what you do and can collaborate with you in the creative process.
We had that with our 2012 album in Steve Bartek. His son Christopher was the engineer. Unfortunately we didn't get to see it all the way through as Steve had to move on with his film score work. (which is his livelihood) So we ended up throwing together various tracks we had been working on. It wasn't a REAL album for us;
We had done Mr Farmer as a tribute to Sky Saxon for a separate project.
We did Charlotte's Remains for an album by the Fuzztones.
We had written World Citizen as the theme song for a documentary about Garry Davis.
The recordings of the old SAC songs were done more as a research project. The idea was to see if we still sounded like the SAC after 40 plus years. But, it was mainly for our own edification, not intended to be released as an album.
We did however, intend to make a new album so when we came to that impasse we just released what we had in the can.
Since then we have recorded a few other songs with a few different producers. All of whom were into the band but for one reason or another those songs have been somewhat prematurely aborted, not entirely though.
We did a new recording of Incense and Peppermints with Ken Roberts that was primarily done for licensing purposes.
We also recorded four new songs with Kerry Brown as producer. A project that started of with Billy Corgan.
So we have five songs to release. But, we are in the process of re thinking them. Too much time goes by and you start changing things and getting new ideas.
The goal is to revisit this stuff and get it all out this year. Previous Message
Do you have any special qualities you'd look for in finding a proper fit for producer or are you able to work with almost any appointed assistant?How about engineers?I suppose you might want yours and their visions for a record on the same page....
